As guest curator of Hung Hsien: Between Worlds, I curated the first major retrospective of pioneering modern ink artist Hung Hsien (洪嫻, Margaret Chang, b. 1933) to be presented in Asia. Following its debut at Asia Society Texas, the exhibition marked the first exhibition to travel between Asia Society museums globally, bringing this landmark retrospective to Hong Kong and introducing Hung's extraordinary career to new audiences across the region.

Surveying more than seventy years of artistic practice, the exhibition traced Hung's remarkable journey from her classical ink training in China and Taiwan to the highly original visual language she developed in the United States, where she synthesized the traditions of Chinese ink painting with the expressive possibilities of postwar abstraction. Through works drawn from the artist's archive and private collections, Between Worlds reexamined Hung's pivotal yet long-overlooked contribution to the history of modern ink painting and global modernism, positioning her as one of the most significant innovators of contemporary ink art.

The Hong Kong presentation also introduced a site-specific curatorial intervention that foregrounded Hung's close relationship with the city. Between 1978 and 1983, while teaching at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, her practice evolved in response to the city's visual and cultural landscape. To acknowledge this important chapter, I recreated Moods of Nature: Four Contemporary Chinese Landscape Artists (Hong Kong Arts Centre, 1983), one of the artist's most significant Hong Kong exhibitions. Featuring loans from the Hong Kong Museum of Art alongside archival photographs from Asia Art Archive, this gallery situated Hung's work within the artistic milieu of 1980s Hong Kong and connected the retrospective to the city's own history of modern ink art.
